Risk Assessment

The goal of the Risk Assessment process is to identify and remove a threat or reduce the level of risk by adding precautions or control measures. By doing so, you have created a safer and healthier workplace.

Although the exact nature of potential disasters or their resulting consequences are difficult to determine, it is beneficial to perform a comprehensive risk assessment of all threats, including natural, technical, social and human, that can realistically occur in the organization and what is the risk of those threats. The risk assessment process will also evaluate the safety of critical documents and vital records.

Items to consider in determining the probability of a specific disaster should include, but are not limited to:

  • Geographic location

  • Degree of accessibility to the organization

  • History of the area's susceptibility to natural threats

  • Hazardous waste and combustible products

  • Proximity to power sources, water, bodies, and airports

  • Topography of the area

  • History of local utility companies in providing uninterrupted services

  • Proximity to major highways which transport

  • Proximity to nuclear power plants.

All company locations and facilities shoudl be included in the risk assessment.

Not ALL threats present the same risk at your organization. Risks are rated based on: Probability to occurence and impact to the organization.
